Kuleana

January 14, 2021 Today was Plastic Play Wednesday #6 (I still owe myself #5 – I skipped last weeks to go for a run in the sun that was much needed) Today we talked about Limu Koku, an edible seaweed featured in the picture above, ancient practices of tattooing in Hawai’i after one survives a volcanic eruption (as Susan did in 2019) and what it means to be a care taker of one’s environment. Kuleana is a uniquely Hawaiian value and practice which is loosely translated to mean “responsibility.” The word “kuleana” refers to a reciprocal relationship between the person who is responsible, and the thing which they are responsible for. For example, Hawaiians have a kuleana to our land: to care for it and to respect it, and in return, our land has the kuleana to feed, shelter, and clothe us, through this relationship we maintain balance within society and with our natural environment.” A quote from Susan about her experience with the volcanic eruptions that happened in Hawaii a few years ago. “As a lava evacuee I owe myself a tattoo because that’s an important marker that needs to be honored. But I need to do it in the old style. And I have to do it myself. So I’m still pondering what the geometric will be. Because I’m a hula dancer, usually it would be around my ankle or my wrist. So you might see why that might be a little difficult to execute…but it can be done, but it might be years before I get to it because the image has not come to me. And one thing I know about practice here is that you have to wait for it to tell you what to do. You don’t just blindly put something on cos you think it’s the right thing. It will manifest probably in the form of an Aumākua animal and when that animal tells me what to do then I know what my image is. Meanwhile I’m seeking that image and that’s part of that process. Which has to do with ancient practice and not necessarily with modern plastics but I like to bring ancient practice into the modern world because it’s here.” Here is the rest of our conversation. Speaking of caring more, I feel myself more invested in putting more care into how the video feels and looks. Not sure where this is all going but if I am able to archive some of Susan’s work (and my own) while developing a skill that I enjoy, then it’s all good.
